Anchorage Infrastructure Projects Move Forward This Summer

Construction is underway this summer on multiple projects at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, including Taxiway R North & U Improvements, Terminal Water Main Improvements, and North Terminal North Apron and Taxilane Reconstruction.

Airport Site Activity

The listed work at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport forms part of the airport's current infrastructure program. These efforts address pavement, water systems and apron areas during the 2026 summer season. The projects sit alongside separate planning for the Glenn Highway interchange, which remains scheduled to begin in 2027.

Trail and Rail Links

The Downtown Trail Connection, which will link the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail to Ship Creek Trail, has reached final design and is expected to start construction in 2026. The Alaska Railroad is separately advancing the Anchorage Area Bridge Project to replace the bridge over Ship Creek at MP 114.3, with project details released during 2026.

Funding and Port Measures

Anchorage voters are scheduled to consider a municipal bond package in April 2026 that would support capital needs for roads, fire stations, parks, libraries and transit facilities, including Elmore Station parking lot reconstruction. The Anchorage Assembly also approved port revenue bonds up to $400 million to refinance debt and fund capital improvements at the Don Young Port of Alaska. Peach Holdings is proceeding with the $300 million Block 41 redevelopment on the former 4th Avenue Theatre site, where a mixed-use tower with retail, parking and residential or hotel units is planned.

Assembly Actions on Revenue

The Anchorage Assembly approved a ballot proposition for a 3% sales and use tax, with proceeds allocated 1% each to property-tax relief, public safety and infrastructure, and childcare and housing. The same meeting approved an ordinance to sunset the Urban Design Commission and shift its duties to the Planning and Zoning Commission. Additional appropriations of $590,000 from the Areawide General Fund and $585,000 from the Building Safety Service Area Fund were made for new permit software in the Development Services Department.
